Yup pretty cryptic, I got the same email regarding my entry.
So I googled it and found your post.

Terra Dawn said...

Ha! Me too!! I'm wondering what this "Round 1" consists of. I feel like I'm getting a back ground check done next or something.

Terra Dawn said...

Ha! Got it! Scroll down to "Judging".

Damn it. Wrong website....ignore that link. I'm done......

I just got the email too. Did anyone notice that they don't even notify you of judging dates on the website? All of this is keeping me on the edge of my seat.

William H said...

Its on their website now ...August 18th Winners and finalists announced.

I wonder if its like the 'honorable mentions' of last year, of which they seem to have awarded a great many!

Aaron said...

I was an honorable mention last year, but don't recall getting an email notifying me of advancing to Round 1 Judging? Maybe it's a new system this year? Here's to all of us making it on to Round 2?

I got the same email regarding my entry.
So I googled it and found your post. If someone know please let me know what does this "Round1" means..

Very cryptic email

Very bad grammar, as well :-)

Me too! I got the same email!

ME TOO! It's driving me batty! I received about 20 honorable mentions last year (have never placed), but yeah - no emails, UNLESS of course this is a new procedure. I googled "ipa round 1 judging?" and found this post as well!

UGH! It's driving me crazy. And yeah they're supposed to announce winners on August 18th.

If anyone makes it to Round 2, post it here, because then that way the rest of us can gauge whether we too have made it or not.

I sort of like the old way of just waiting until the winners are announced to see if you won or not. Heh.

I got the same email from IPA yesterday, googled for clarification and found Aaron's blog

FYI--This blurb was in the Lucie's August newsletter that arrived in my email box this morning. It produced more questions than answers in regards to what Round 1 means, but passing it along.

INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS COMPETITION UPDATE.
The stiff competition is stacked up once again for the International Photography Awards competiton, now in it's seventh year. Vetting has been completed and Official Selections have been notified, now it's time for the Honorable Mentions and Category Winners to be announced. Stay Tuned. August 18th is the big day. In the meantime, you can peruse the previous years winners, or hear from last year's winners backstage. All that and more at www.photoawards.com

I have received this as well, and it's rather confusing. I also got honorable mentions in the last IPA but never got an e-mail about rounds.

Either way I think this contest is one of the better.

Philippe said...

The same over here, got this mail for my entries and googled and landed here. So I guess this does not mean much. And we can expect more towards the end of August. Anybody ever seen a timeline for the judging rounds and announcements?

Here it is the 2nd round...

Congratulations. Your entry '696' has passed through the first of three rounds in the
jurying process and is now an Official Selection of the 2009 International Photography Awards.
If your entry passes through the second round, it becomes an Honorable Mention and is eligible
to compete for the third and final round to determine the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners in
each subcategory. The overall cateogory finalists go on to compete for cash prizes and Lucie
statuettes at the forthcoming Lucie Awards.

If your entry advances, you will receive an email from us on Tuesday. Congratulations once more.

Awh shoot,darn, drat
I guess that's me out then.

They must have been working overtime on selections at the weekend.

Unknown said...

Don't give up just yet! I just got two more notifications! Literally just now. :)

Ari said...

Yep, I'm guessing this system is a bit new and they are working rather hard.

I just received an e-mail that one of my photos made it past round one, before I received an e-mail that it had made it into round 1.

Mike said...

I think the second email is not a notification for making Round 2, it is a "clarification" of the first cryptic email. The second email has subject "Clarification: Your Entry is Now an Official Selection of IPA 2009" and if you read the message carefully it doesn't say that you made Round 2.
I got 4 Round 1 emails (2 pics each in 2 categories) and each picture got one of the "clarification" emails.

Anonymous said...

i got the same round 1 email on friday, no second mail sofare and think i can give up already...

Anonymous said...

yepp. got second email. still on...

Anonymous said...

Did anyone get the email today that they promised to send out? the third email for the honerable mention?

Anonymous said...

They promised to send it next Tuesday, not today.

Anonymous said...

Yet, another cryptic message!
How in the world are you supposed to know which Tuesday they're exactly talking about? they can't even have the decency to specify what they meant by "Tuesday?!".

Anyway, thanks for clarifying.

Unknown said...

It wouldn't make sense for them to send it next Tuesday because that's the day they're supposed to be announcing the final winners (August 18). And that won't happen until they've judged on all three rounds, so they must have originally meant this Tuesday...

Anonymous said...

i also think it is next tuesday.
if you go through their site , it says somewhere that it is all happening on tuesday
anyone got the mail today?
that would clarify the whole thing
good luck to all

Anonymous said...

Is next Tuesday (18th). They will announce HM and winners. Relax, my Dear.

Anonymous said...

By the way, I got the email today (Tuesday.

Anonymous said...

what does it say?
that you received honorable mention?

Anonymous said...

No, I got today the same email like many of you got yesterday saying: "...If your entry advances, you will receive an email from us on Tuesday". So, relax, have a drink, take some pictures.

julia chen said...

just got the mail
" has passed through the first of three rounds in the jurying process...."

yes, I think it should be next tuesday.

Terra Dawn said...

I'm confused. But it sounds like everyone is. I think I got carpal tunnel checking my Blackberry every five minutes today!! I hope it's next Tuesday, though....Good luck to all!!! (If there is still a round to have good for!!)

Aaron said...

check most recent post for current situation. It's been explained.

Anonymous said...

Anybody know how many Honorable Mentions there will be?

Anonymous said...

I guess that we will find out this Thursday or Friday.

Anonymous said...

So what actually gets exhibited and where? I don't see any images other than previous 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners exhibited on the IPA website. Do those who placed or honorable mention winners get included in the 2009 publication or exhibition?

julia chen said...

Is everyone got "Round 1" and "Clarification" ? I think this two mails seems one round. Got the "Clarification" doesn't mean another passed, right?

Anonymous said...

third round ...
received on 13/08 (10:30 CEST italy)

Congratulations. Your entry '696' has advanced through the second round and is now in the third and final round of the jurying process. Your entry is now an official Honorable Mention of the 2009 International Photography Awards.
In addition, your entry is now competing for a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place title. All winners will be announced on Tuesday, August 18th.
Congratulations again. Stay Tuned and thank you for participating in the 2009 International Photography Awards.

Sincerely,

Has anyone else in this blog received the same mail?

Riccardo

Anonymous said...

Yes! I did!!!

terra Dawn said...

Whew!!! I just got three notifications for my entries heading to round three! I guess we will find out the rest on Tuesday!!

Congrats everyone!!!

And thanks Aaron for this blog post. It seems IPA might benefit from a forum.....lol.

Anonymous said...

I'll sign this so I'm distinguishable from other anonymous posters. I got six Honorable Mention notifications via email today with no duplications.

My question remains what gets exhibited? Where? Do they now request higher resolution images? Who gets to exhibit? Can someone who has been through this before let me know what the procedures are from this point?

as far as i know, they do nothing with the honorable mentions. the only thing is, that you will be able to print your certificat after the login.
johannes

ps. didn´t get any mail so far :-(

Hi posted the other day. I got 4 emails for 4 different entries saying I made it to round2. Two emails came on Monday, then the last two on Tuesday.

I got two emails today, Thursday, the 13th saying two made it to round three.

I wonder too, how many honorable mentions there are?

Anonymous said...

I read that one guy got 21 Honorable Mentions last year...
How many entries should have he sent?
I got mine today :-) (only 3 photos submitted)

Anonymous said...

I also received an email that my entry has advanced through the second round and is now in the third and final round. two emails for my entries.
I think there will be many Honorable Mentions because there are many categouries.

Anonymous said...

"as far as i know, they do nothing with the honorable mentions. the only thing is, that you will be able to print your certificate after the login."

Hmmmm. Big deal. The honorable mention certificates and $4.95 will get me a cup of coffee.

I don´t understand what some people pretend when participate in a contest...An Honorable Mention is an Honorable Mention. No more, no less. And is not bad.

Anonymous said...

Have you guys noticed how many non-pro winners are actually pro-photographers like benny haryanto
who lists off his campaigns on his website but won last year was a non-pro- lmao

Anonymous said...

"Q: Who is considered a professional photographer?
A: Those who earn, or have earned, the majority of their income from photography."

Perhaps he gets more money as an IT Consultant than as a photographer...

Anonymous said...

Hi people,i too got the,Congratulations. Your entry 'Caught in time' has advanced through the second round
and is now in the third and final round of the jurying process. Your entry is now an
official Honorable Mention of the 2009 International Photography Awards....Now..if my ladder that i was climbing so blindly has come to the last rung,is it still possible to get recognised by just having an honurable mention?or perhaps it could be more viable to have a dis-honourable mention form this experience? :)...Laterrrr

Anonymous said...

Ask those who havn´t got an HM what they prefer...

Will H. said...

But taking the extreme case of the entrant with 21 honorable mentions.

Doesn't that work in the opposite way?
Highlighting the fact that from such a large (expensive) volume of entries that none of them were deemed worthy of the finals.

I'm sure that's not a fact I'd want to share!

Anonymous said...

The guy who got 21 HM was also IPA´s "Fine Art Photographer of the Year" and got 1st and 2nd in Abstract...

Will H said...

I hadn't been aware of that - so all credit to that guy.

The point remains though, from 22,000 entries there seems to be a heck of a lot of Honorable mentions across the board.

...but I guess that makes good business sense in a pay-to-play contest, when there's alawys a next year to re-enter.

Anonymous said...

How much is "a lot"? There are near 50 categories. Say, 20 per category: 1000 hm. Is that a lot? Maybe. Maybe not. Anyway, i am just guessing about figures.

johannes said...

i just write to let you know, that you all have beaten at least one: me.

so, congratulations and good luck for the last round.

Thanks Johannes. I wonder (as you) why this people complain because they got an honorable mention...

Anonymous said...

I didn't get third email... ;-(

What time are they announcing the winners on Tuesday?

Anonymous said...

Are you serious? Do you want to know what time???!!!

Aaron said...

If I know most competitions, it will be late on tuesday, if not delayed until wednesday... so no need to check email every ten minutes tomorrow.

Considering the amount of categories and pro vs. non-pro divisions, I think a few hundred honorable mentions out of 22,000 entries is still something to be proud of.

Anonymous said...

I know I need to learn to live on rejection but it is still good that the anti-depresants are kicking in! I wonder if all 22,000 entries got the first email, then maybe I could feel a little good for at least getting vetted, if not what a tease!

Congrat's to all - can you loan me a few bucks so I can enter again next year?

RESULTS ARE ANNOUNCED! http://www.photoawards.com/en/Pages/Gallery/winner.php

Anonymous said...

Haven't recieved an official email from IPA, so results are not through yet, that list above is last years.

Anonymous said...

this is my the first time to entry IPA, although just into Round 1.

I like here, shall we still have some photo message post here? like share our entry, or other photography game information?

or anything?

Anonymous said...

If you are living in 2010, that winners list is last years. For the rest, is this years.

Anonymous said...

those results are not last year's, the 2009 winners have been announced on the IPA site!
